Frequently Asked Questions

How is EPF calculated? +
Employee contributes 12% of (Basic + DA) every month. Employer also contributes 12%, but split: 3.67% goes to EPF account + 8.33% goes to EPS (Employee Pension Scheme, capped at 8.33% of ₹15,000 = ₹1,250/month). Interest @8.25% is calculated monthly and credited yearly.
Is EPF tax-free? +
EPF enjoys EEE status: (1) Employee contribution gives 80C deduction up to ₹1.5 lakh, (2) Interest earned is tax-free if EPF rate ≤9.5%, (3) Withdrawal is tax-free if continuous service ≥5 years. If withdrawn before 5 years, entire amount becomes taxable.
Can I withdraw EPF before retirement? +
Yes, partial withdrawal allowed for: marriage (after 7 yrs), home purchase (after 5 yrs), medical emergency (anytime), unemployment (75% after 1 month, 100% after 2 months). Full withdrawal only at retirement (58) or 2 months unemployment.
EPF vs PPF vs NPS - which is best? +
EPF: 8.25% (auto-deducted, employer matches) - BEST for salaried. PPF: 7.1% (voluntary, 15-yr lock) - good for non-salaried. NPS: 9-12% (market-linked, partial taxable) - good for higher returns. Salaried employees get EPF mandatorily; add PPF for tax saving and NPS for higher equity exposure.
What is EPS (Employee Pension Scheme)? +
8.33% of employer's 12% goes to EPS, capped at ₹1,250/month (8.33% of ₹15,000). At retirement, you get monthly pension based on average salary and years of service. Pension formula: (Pensionable Salary × Service Years) / 70.
How to check EPF balance? +
3 ways: (1) EPFO portal: epfindia.gov.in - login with UAN, (2) UMANG app on phone, (3) SMS "EPFOHO UAN" to 7738299899, (4) Missed call to 011-22901406. Activate UAN first if not done.
