Frequently Asked Questions

What is PPF and current interest rate? +
PPF (Public Provident Fund) is a long-term government-backed savings scheme with a 15-year lock-in period. Current interest rate is 7.1% per annum (compounded yearly), revised quarterly by the Government of India.
Maximum and minimum investment in PPF? +
Minimum is ₹500 per year and maximum is ₹1,50,000 per financial year. You can invest in lump sum or up to 12 installments per year. Invest before 5th of each month to get full month's interest.
Is PPF completely tax-free? +
Yes! PPF enjoys EEE (Exempt-Exempt-Exempt) status: (1) Investment qualifies for Section 80C deduction up to ₹1.5 lakh, (2) Interest earned is tax-free, (3) Maturity amount is fully tax-free.
Can I extend PPF after 15 years? +
Yes, you can extend in blocks of 5 years (with or without contributions) for unlimited times. This is great for compounding gains since you continue earning 7.1% on accumulated amount.
Can I withdraw money before 15 years? +
Partial withdrawal is allowed from 7th year onwards (max 50% of balance). Loan facility available between 3rd-6th year. Premature closure only in special cases (life-threatening disease, education, NRI status).
PPF vs Mutual Funds vs FD - which is better? +
PPF: Safe + 7.1% + tax-free + 15-year lock. Mutual Funds: 12-15% returns but market risk. FD: 6-7% but interest is taxable. PPF is best for safe, tax-free long-term wealth. Use SIP in mutual funds for higher returns alongside PPF.
