Frequently Asked Questions

What is ROI? +
ROI (Return on Investment) measures profitability of an investment. Formula: ROI % = ((Final Value - Initial Investment) / Initial Investment) ร— 100. A 50% ROI means you earned 50% over your initial amount.
Difference between Total ROI and Annualized ROI? +
Total ROI is the entire return over the holding period. Annualized ROI converts it to per-year basis using compound formula. โ‚น1L โ†’ โ‚น2L over 5 years = 100% Total ROI but only 14.87% annualized. Annualized helps compare investments of different durations.
What's a good ROI in India? +
Asset-wise: FD/PPF 6-8% per year, Mutual Funds 10-15%, Stocks 12-18% (long-term avg), Real Estate 8-12%, Gold 8-10%. Anything beating inflation (~6%) is good. ROI above 20% annualized is excellent but riskier.
Should I include taxes in ROI? +
For accurate post-tax ROI, deduct LTCG/STCG tax. Stocks: 12.5% LTCG above โ‚น1.25L. Mutual Funds: similar rates. Real Estate: 12.5% with indexation removed. Use NET amount (after tax) as Final Value for true ROI.
How is ROI different from CAGR? +
ROI is total return %, CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) is annualized ROI. They're related: CAGR = ((Final/Initial)^(1/years)) - 1. CAGR is preferred for comparing long-term investments because it accounts for time.
