📖 How This Typing Test Works

This is a clean, real-time typing speed test designed to feel natural and distraction-free. Start typing the highlighted text and the timer begins automatically. Correct letters turn light, mistakes turn red, and a smooth caret follows your position. Your live WPM and accuracy update as you type.

Choose your mode

Pick time mode (type as much as you can in 15/30/60/120 seconds), words mode (race to finish a fixed number of words), or quote mode (type a full meaningful sentence). The text setting controls difficulty: common words, an extended vocabulary, or text with punctuation and numbers.

Understand your score

Net WPM counts only correctly typed words and is the figure that matters most. Raw WPM includes everything you typed. Accuracy is the share of correct keystrokes, and consistency shows how steady your speed stayed.

Keyboard shortcuts

⌨️ Key Depressions (KDPH) — the govt-exam metric

Indian recruitment tests measure typing two ways: words per minute (WPM) and key depressions per hour (KDPH). One word is standardised as 5 key depressions, so the conversion is simple: KDPH = WPM × 300. This test shows both live, because SSC's DEST is set in depressions while CHSL's typing test is set in WPM.

30 WPM9,000 KDPHRRB NTPC Typist (Eng) · CPCT English
35 WPM10,500 KDPHSSC CHSL LDC/JSA (English)
40 WPM12,000 KDPHComfortable safety margin

Benchmarks above are the commonly prescribed figures; the exact requirement, passage length and mistake-penalty rules are printed in each notification, which always prevails. Evaluation is on net speed — errors cost you, so accuracy above 95% matters as much as raw pace.

Use Exam Mode above to practise at real exam length (10–15 minutes) on continuous passages with a pass/fail verdict against your target — sprint speed on a 15-second test routinely drops 15–20% over a full 10-minute passage. ❓ Frequently Asked Questions

How is typing speed (WPM) calculated?

WPM = correctly typed characters ÷ 5, normalised to 60 seconds. Raw WPM includes mistakes; net WPM counts only correct words.

What is a good typing speed?

Average is ~40 WPM. Good is 50–70 WPM; professionals reach 70–100+. SSC CHSL requires about 35 WPM in English.

What do accuracy and consistency mean?

Accuracy is the percentage of correct characters. Consistency measures how steady your speed was throughout.

Is this typing test free?

Yes — completely free, no signup, runs entirely in your browser. Your best score is saved only on your device.

How can I improve my typing speed?

Practise ~10 minutes daily, use all ten fingers on the home row, don't look at the keyboard, and prioritise accuracy first.

What is 8,000 key depressions per hour in WPM?

About 26.7 WPM. One word equals 5 key depressions, so KDPH = WPM × 300. SSC's DEST requirement of 8,000 KDPH means roughly 2,000 depressions in the 15-minute test — this page shows your live KDPH so you can track it directly.

Is 35 WPM enough for SSC CHSL?

35 WPM net is the commonly prescribed benchmark for the CHSL LDC/JSA English typing test (30 WPM for Hindi), evaluated on a roughly 10-minute passage after deducting errors. Aim for 40+ WPM at 95%+ accuracy in practice — and always verify the current notification.
