Studies show that Indians and other South Asians have a higher body fat percentage at the same BMI compared to Caucasians. This means health risks like diabetes and heart disease appear at lower BMI in Indians. The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) recommends using lower BMI cutoffs for Asians.
BMI doesn't distinguish between muscle and fat. Athletes with high muscle mass may have high BMI but low body fat. For more accurate assessment, also check:
✅ Waist circumference (should be under 90cm for men, 80cm for women in India)
✅ Body fat percentage (use our Body Fat Calculator)
✅ Waist-to-hip ratio
