Frequently Asked Questions

How is CGPA calculated from SGPA? +
Weighted method (most accurate): CGPA = ÎŖ(SGPA × Credits) / ÎŖ(Credits). For example: Sem1 (8.5 SGPA, 22 credits), Sem2 (8.0 SGPA, 24 credits) → CGPA = (8.5×22 + 8.0×24) / (22+24) = 8.24. Simple average: CGPA = Sum of all SGPAs / Number of Semesters. Use simple average only if all semesters have similar credits.
CGPA vs SGPA - what's the difference? +
SGPA = Semester GPA (one semester only). CGPA = Cumulative GPA (all semesters combined). Your final CGPA at graduation reflects your overall academic performance. CGPA is what gets shown on your final degree certificate and transcript.
Convert CGPA to percentage +
Most universities use: Percentage = CGPA × 9.5. Some use × 10 (Anna University, VTU). Mumbai uses (CGPA - 0.75) × 10. Always check your university's specific formula. Your university transcript will show both CGPA and equivalent percentage.
What is a good CGPA in India? +
9.0+ = Outstanding (top recruiters, IIM/IIT placements). 8.0+ = Excellent (good for placements, MS abroad). 7.0+ = First Class (most companies eligible). 6.0+ = Second Class (limited options). Below 6.0 = Limited career options. For top tech companies and PSUs, aim for 7.5+ minimum.
Does CGPA matter for jobs? +
YES, especially for fresher jobs and campus placements. Most companies have CGPA cutoffs (typically 7.0+ for tech, 6.5+ for non-tech). Investment banks and consulting firms ask 8.5+. After 2-3 years of work experience, CGPA becomes less important and skills/experience matter more.
Can I improve CGPA after low SGPA? +
Yes, but it's gradual. Each new semester's SGPA averages with existing CGPA. Score 9+ in remaining semesters to pull up CGPA. Mathematical reality: After 4 semesters with 7.0 average, getting 9.0 in next 4 semesters gives final CGPA of ~8.0. Focus on consistent performance from semester 1.

Disclaimer

This CGPA calculator provides estimates based on standard formulas. Different universities have specific calculation methods that may vary from the standard weighted average.

  • 🎓 University-specific rules: Some universities exclude certain semesters (audit courses, soft skills) from CGPA calculation. Check your university's regulations.
  • 📋 Official transcript: Your university transcript shows the OFFICIAL CGPA. Use that for all formal applications, jobs, and admissions.
  • đŸ”ĸ Credit weighting: Weighted method (with credits) is more accurate. Simple average is only correct if all semesters have equal credits.
  • 📝 Backlog impact: Failed/repeated subjects affect CGPA differently across universities. Some universities include only the latest grade, others use the average.
