Frequently Asked Questions

How is SGPA calculated? +
SGPA = ÎŖ(Credit × Grade Point) / ÎŖ(Credits). For example: Subject 1 (4 credits, A=9), Subject 2 (3 credits, B+=8) → SGPA = (4×9 + 3×8) / (4+3) = (36+24) / 7 = 8.57. Higher credit subjects have more impact on your SGPA.
SGPA vs CGPA - difference? +
SGPA is for ONE semester (Semester GPA). CGPA is for ALL semesters (Cumulative GPA). CGPA = Average of all SGPAs (weighted by credits if needed). At graduation, your CGPA represents your overall academic performance across all semesters.
SGPA to percentage conversion +
Most universities use: Percentage = SGPA × 9.5 or Percentage = (SGPA − 0.75) × 10 (Mumbai University). Anna University uses SGPA × 10. Always check your university's specific conversion formula on their official website.
What is a good SGPA? +
Indian university classification: 9.0+ = Outstanding, 8.0-8.99 = Excellent / First Class with Distinction, 7.0-7.99 = First Class, 6.0-6.99 = Second Class, 5.0-5.99 = Pass. For higher studies abroad, aim for 8.0+ SGPA. For top jobs, 7.5+ is generally preferred.
How to improve SGPA? +
Focus on HIGH-CREDIT subjects first as they impact SGPA more. Score O (10) in high-credit subjects rather than just passing them. Attend all classes (attendance affects internal marks), submit assignments on time, prepare well for sessionals, and seek help from professors during exam time.
Backlog effect on SGPA +
Backlogs (failed subjects) hurt SGPA significantly because failed subjects get 0 grade points but their credits still count in denominator. After clearing backlogs in supplementary exams, the new grade replaces F. Most universities allow this re-evaluation to show improved SGPA.
